Course Description and Goals

For graduating seniors only. Group design project of civil engineering systems requiring synthesis, data gathering, preliminary investigation, master planning, conceptual designs, layouts, support studies, cost estimates and report writing. Emphasis will be on alternatives, constraints, economics, use of consultants, schedules, professional ethics and current practice, and written and oral presentations of reports. (qualifies as a guaranteed practicum experience) The goal of this course is designed to apply the scientific, engineering, technical and communication skills acquired in the four year university experience to a civil engineering related design topic. To make a design, including summary of technical details, in a written and oral report.

Class Information

Class attendance is required. You are responsible for all material handed out in class and all information given in class. Being absent is not an excuse. You are expected to be in class at the beginning of the class period and to remain until the class is dismissed. Be prepared for class: paper, pen, calculator, etc. When assignments are given, they must be done. Deadlines for assignments are to be met. Civility and respect for and in regard to others in this class is the acceptable order. The HONOR CODE is in effect in this class. Violation of the HONOR CODE will result in a grade of "F" for this course.

Grading Guidelines

Project Diary	To be kept by each individual in class. Who, What, When, Where, Time.
Team Work	Willingness to cooperate on times and durations of team meetings. Task responsibility assumption or sharing. Promptness and completeness in duties assumed/assigned. Etc.
Oral Presentation	Content: activity definition, basis for solution, technical quality of solution, economy of solution, etc. Perception of presentation: coordination, well prepared, presentation aids, achieved objective.
Written	Title Page Table of Contents Letter of Transmittal Summary: Abstract, Conclusions, Recommendations *Body: History of subject        Nature of the study        Reasons for conclusions and recommendations        Conclusions        Recommendations Appendix: All data which cannot be worked into        the body of the report without        interrupting the thought or which        is too technical. *For all above in the 'body': Correctness, Clearness, Conciseness, Completeness, Accuracy, and Convenience are the accepted norm.
